Nigerian media mogul Raymond Dokpesi passes away at 71

Raymond Dokpesi, one of Nigeria’s most prominent media moguls and a respected figure in the country’s business and philanthropic circles, has passed away at the age of 71.

The news was announced by his son, Raymond Dokpesi, Jr., who released a statement revealing that the chairman of DAAR Communications, the parent company of RayPower FM and Africa Independent Television (AIT), died on Mon., May 29, 2023, in Abuja.

In the heartfelt statement, Dokpesi, Jr. described his father as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. The media mogul’s passing is mourned by all who knew him, as he was not only a family man but also a trailblazer in the media industry and a dedicated philanthropist.

Dokpesi made significant contributions to Nigeria’s media landscape, particularly with the establishment of RayPower FM, the country’s first private FM radio station, and AIT, both launched in 1996.

His vision and entrepreneurial spirit played a crucial role in shaping the media industry in Nigeria, paving the way for greater diversity and innovation.

Reports indicate that Dokpesi, who was a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), passed away in an Abuja hospital following a stroke. It is believed that the stroke occurred after the conclusion of the recent Ramadan fast.

Dokpesi’s contributions extended beyond the media realm. He was the deputy director-general of the technical and systems division of Abubakar’s presidential campaign council, highlighting his involvement in Nigeria’s political landscape.
