South African exec Anton Gildenhuys earns $1.1-million salary from Sanlam

South African leading business executive Anton Gildenhuys, the CEO of Sanlam Retail Affluent, a subsidiary of Sanlam Limited — Africa’s largest insurer — received a total compensation of R20.1 million ($1.1 million) from the insurer in 2022.

The compensation package, which showcases his dedication to the insurer’s financial standing in 2022, exceeded the previous year’s total reward of R19.03 million ($1.01 million) by 5.5 percent.

The slight increase in his salary can be linked to the insurer’s financial standing in 2022, as Sanlam, achieved a total comprehensive income of R10.5 billion ($557.33 million) and a profit of R13.28 billion ($705.39 million) at the end of its 2022 fiscal year.

Gildenhuys’ 2022 compensation package comprises a base salary of R5.65 million ($0.3 million) and a performance-based short-term incentive of R4.36 million ($0.23 million) derived from the insurer’s exceptional performance during the fiscal year.

He also received a long-term incentive award of R6.8 million ($0.36 million) from the group highlighting his dedication to the group and his wealth of expertise as a seasoned professional.

Gildenhuys has been the CEO of Sanlam Retail Affluent since Sept. 14, 2020. He has a long history with the company, dating back to 1996. He previously served as chief actuary and group risk officer at Sanlam Limited from July 1, 2015, until September 2020.

Since assuming the mantle of leadership as the CEO of SA Retail Affluent of Sanlam Limited, Gildenhuys has jointly led Sanlam to deliver impressive financial milestones, with the group’s headline earnings soaring by 2.8 percent from R9.03 billion ($480.85 million) in 2021 to R9.29 billion ($494.46 million) in the 2022 fiscal year.
