South African billionaire Nicky Oppenheimer, the country’s second-richest person, has seen his fortune swell by $13 billion, narrowing the gap with Johann Rupert, who leads the ranking with $15.3 billion. The surge has strengthened Oppenheimer’s standing not only in South Africa but also among the world’s wealthiest individuals.
Nicky Oppenheimer’s net worth reaches $13 billion
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which tracks the world’s top 500 billionaires, Oppenheimer’s wealth has climbed steadily this year, adding $1.43 billion since January. His net worth now stands at about $13 billion, up from $11.5 billion at the beginning of the year.
Much of this growth is tied to private investments handled through Stockdale Street in London and Tana Africa Capital in Johannesburg, vehicles that have allowed the Oppenheimer family to remain active across industries even after leaving the diamond trade.
From diamonds to diversified investments
Oppenheimer sold the family’s 40 percent stake in De Beers, the world’s largest rough diamond producer, to Anglo American for $5.2 billion in 2012. The deal ended an 80-year family link to the diamond trade and gave him the freedom to pursue new opportunities.
Since then, he has worked closely with his son Jonathan to build Oppenheimer Generations, a family office based in Johannesburg and Singapore that invests across Africa and Asia.
One of their standout moves has been in Nigeria. Through Jonathan’s investment firm, Oppenheimer Partners, the family took full control of GZ Industries, the country’s largest beverage can manufacturer, after buying out a 37.5 percent stake from Affirma Capital in 2023.
Oppenheimer’s game reserve safeguards wildlife
Yet Oppenheimer’s influence stretches beyond finance. Alongside Jonathan, he co-owns Tswalu Kalahari, South Africa’s largest private game reserve, which protects endangered species and preserves one of the country’s most important ecosystems.
He also owns Shangani Ranch in Zimbabwe, a 65,000-hectare estate that not only sustains wildlife migration routes but also provides around 400 local jobs and contributes to the economy through beef exports to the UK.
