South African property developer Stephen Brookes, founder and chief executive of Balwin Properties, has seen the value of his stake in the Johannesburg-listed company rise by more than $10 million following a steady climb in its share price over recent months.
Brookes’ stake in Balwin surges $10.4 million
Brookes, who owns a 33.07 percent controlling stake in the company—equal to about 171.7 million ordinary shares—has watched the market value of his holdings grow by R182.06 million ($10.44 million) in the past six months. His total stake is now worth an estimated $27.38 million, based on data from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE).
The recent boost comes after steady interest from investors in Balwin Properties, which is due to the ongoing demand for its affordable housing projects. The company builds large residential estates for low- to middle-income buyers, with a focus on being cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
Balwin shares jump, market cap tops $82 million
Balwin’s shares have performed strongly this year. Over the past 27 weeks, the stock has jumped 61.63 percent, rising from R1.72 ($0.099) on April 7 to R2.78 ($0.159).
That increase lifted the company’s market cap to more than $82 million, delivering healthy returns for shareholders—particularly Brookes. The market value of his stake rose from R295.41 million ($16.94 million) in early April to R477.47 million ($27.38 million) by mid-October.
Balwin’s stock is up 11.2 percent this year, meaning a $100,000 investment in Balwin's shares at the beginning of 2025 would now be worth roughly $111,200, demonstrating the company's strong performance.
