Carrefour Medical, a healthcare supplier and part of the Cosemad Group, owned by Senegalese healthcare entrepreneur Saliou Mboup, has secured $21 million from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to accelerate its domestic production and distribution of medical equipment and consumables.

The funding, primarily in local currency, will underpin a strategic scale-up of Carrefour Medical’s operations and mark a major step toward reducing Senegal’s reliance on imported healthcare products.

Scaling manufacturing and technical capacity

The financing package will support the completion of Carrefour Medical’s new headquarters, including a technical center for equipment maintenance, a training facility for biomedical engineers, and the operational expansion of its recently built dialysis kit component plant.

These will, in turn, position Carrefour, a fully owned subsidiary of the Cosemad group, as a leading local manufacturer of critical medical supplies and strengthen Senegal’s broader healthcare ecosystem.

CEO Saliou Mboup said the partnership with IFC extended beyond capital, creating an avenue to build a stronger, more resilient business capable of meeting Senegal’s growing healthcare needs. He said: “IFC team worked with us to refine our expansion plans, identify future market opportunities, and validate the relevance and credibility of our vision.”

Driving local healthcare resilience

Carrefour Medical’s growth aligns with Senegal’s Vision 2050, which emphasizes universal health coverage and local manufacturing to improve service delivery.

The funding, part of IFC’s broader push to strengthen local champions in Senegal across critical sectors, including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, energy, and finance, arrives at a time when West Africa faces increasing demand for medical equipment, particularly dialysis kits and other consumables.

By localizing production, it can thus cut costs, deliver more reliable supply chains, and expand access to essential healthcare services across Senegal and the sub-region.

Mboup: A local champion driving regional impact

Founded in 2007 by Saliou Mboup, Carrefour Medical, under his leadership, has grown from a healthcare distribution company to a vertically integrated manufacturer, becoming a link between international standards and local production needs.

The new investment will help the company grow its distribution networks, improve training for its workers, and strengthen its position as a key player in Senegal's healthcare manufacturing industry.

The deal shows that IFC is strategically trying to help African businesses that are both profitable and have a measurable positive effect on society. Carrefour Medical is now in a growth phase that will improve both the ability to produce goods locally and the strength of healthcare in the region.
