Nigeria’s capital market community has paid glowing tribute to one of its most influential architects, Dr. Pascal Gabriel Dozie, OON, CON, the late Nigerian billionaire banker, entrepreneur and former President of the Council of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), whose vision helped shape the modern Nigerian financial ecosystem.

At an Afternoon of Tributes and Special Closing Gong Ceremony held at the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) House in Lagos, captains of industry, policymakers, corporate leaders and market regulators gathered to honour a man widely regarded as a pillar of Nigeria’s private sector development.

Organised by NGX Group, the ceremony celebrated Dr. Dozie not merely as a successful businessman, but as an institution builder whose steady leadership influenced banking, telecommunications, capital markets and economic policy across decades.

Chairman of NGX Group, Alhaji (Dr.) Umaru Kwairanga, described Dozie as a rare combination of banker, economist, entrepreneur and philanthropist, stressing that his greatest legacy lay in building strong institutions.

According to Kwairanga, Dozie’s tenure as President of the NSE Council marked a turning point in the Exchange’s evolution, helping lay the groundwork for a transparent, resilient and globally competitive marketplace.

He noted that Dozie championed reforms that strengthened governance, improved investor confidence and positioned Nigeria’s capital market as a key engine for economic growth.

Champion of professionalism in the private sector

Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, Chairman of MTN Nigeria Plc, said Dozie played a defining role in embedding professionalism and ethical standards within Nigeria’s corporate space.

He recalled Dozie’s calm but firm leadership style, describing him as a man who believed deeply in systems, processes and long-term value rather than short-term gains.

Similarly, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) President, Mr. Gabriel Idahosa, described Dozie as “a man of unwavering principle,” whose life reflected a commitment to ethical leadership and nation-building.

Former NSE Council President, Dr. Raymond Obieri, reflected on years of working closely with Dozie, saying he possessed an uncommon ability to bring clarity in moments of uncertainty.

“Pascal was the kind of leader who brought calm to chaos and vision to uncertainty. His leadership was never about power; it was always about purpose,” Obieri said.

Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Limited, Mr. Ahonsi Unuigbe, urged industry stakeholders to honour Dozie’s memory by preserving the values he championed.

He said the true measure of tribute would be ensuring that institutions strengthened by Dozie continue to operate with integrity, transparency and innovation.
