Oriental Weavers, the world's largest manufacturer of woven carpets, has completed independent verification and certification of its carbon footprint, a move the company says marks a turning point in its push toward measurable climate accountability.

The verification was carried out by an EGAC-accredited Validation and Verification Body, working in line with ISO 14064 standards and the GHG Protocol. Results placed the company's annual emissions at roughly 102,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and about 486,000 metric tons of CO2e for Scope 3 emissions across its value chain.

That last figure is notable. Most industrial companies worldwide do not independently measure or publicly disclose Scope 3 emissions, which cover indirect emissions generated throughout a company's supply chain. Oriental Weavers' decision to include them in a verified external report puts it in a relatively small group of manufacturers taking that step.

"This achievement reflects Oriental Weavers' commitment to transparency and environmental responsibility," said Yasmine Khamis, chair of Oriental Weavers Carpets. "Only a limited number of industrial companies in Egypt have reached this level of independent carbon footprint verification and disclosure."

Khamis said the company plans to generate 20% of its total energy consumption from solar power within five years, spread across 27 factories. She described the effort as part of a broader decarbonization strategy aligned with Egypt's national renewable energy targets.

The certifications come alongside verified results from the company's existing solar investments. A 2.5 megawatt-peak on-site solar photovoltaic plant has already logged a confirmed annual reduction of 1,815 metric tons of CO2 equivalent. A second, 5 MWp solar installation is nearing operation and is projected to cut an additional 3,101 metric tons of CO2e per year once it goes live.

The timing matters. European and North American buyers have become increasingly strict about requiring environmental transparency from manufacturers in their supply chains. Verified emissions data, particularly from Scope 3 sources, is now a factor in procurement decisions for many large international retailers and hospitality brands.

Khamis framed the solar and certification work not as regulatory compliance, but as a competitive edge. "Through precise measurement, certification, and investment in solar energy, the company has achieved measurable emissions reductions," she said, describing the certifications as part of a longer-term plan rather than a one-time milestone.

Oriental Weavers was founded in 1979 by Mohamed Farid Khamis and is listed on the Egyptian Stock Exchange. The company employs more than 19,000 people across 28 factories in Egypt and the United States, produces over 150 million square meters of carpet annually and exports to more than 118 countries. Its product portfolio spans more than 4.5 million unique designs.

With the latest certifications in hand, the company is positioning its verified sustainability record as a core part of its identity in global markets, not just a box to check.
