Amos Nzeyi learned to read and write at Rwere Primary School in Rubanda District. Decades later, he came back to rebuild it.
Nzeyi, a prominent Ugandan businessman and honorary consul of Mauritius in Uganda, has handed over new facilities constructed by his foundation at Rwere Primary School in Bubare Town Council. The donation, valued at Shs150 million, includes two classroom blocks, two staff quarters comprising 12 rooms in total and two kitchens for teachers.
Nzeyi said the project was a personal obligation. "I may not have gone far with formal education, but this school gave me the foundation to read and write, which shaped my future in business. This is my way of appreciating what the school did for me," he said at the handover ceremony.
The decision to intervene was triggered by a visit during which school management outlined two persistent challenges: a shortage of staff accommodation and inadequate classroom space. Nzeyi responded by commissioning the construction and funding it through the Dr. Amos Nzeyi Foundation. He argued that decent housing motivates teachers while adequate classroom space reduces congestion, both of which directly improve learning outcomes.
He also pledged further support, including the installation of electricity, construction of a school gate and provision of a large water tank for rainwater harvesting.
Rwere Primary School currently enrolls 601 pupils and employs 19 teachers, 15 on the government payroll and four privately employed. Of those, only four reside on the school premises due to the limited accommodation available before the new staff quarters were built. Headteacher Andrew Mbabazi welcomed the facilities and said the school plans to fence its compound and upgrade its main gate.
Kabale Resident District Commissioner Maj. Godfrey Katamba, who officiated at the event, commended Nzeyi for supporting his former school. He also pointed to Rwere's strong performance in last year's Primary Leaving Examinations as evidence that government schools can deliver results when supported.
Established in the 1920s as a church-founded institution, Rwere Primary School has produced several prominent alumni, including former prime ministers Amama Mbabazi and Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, as well as former Bank of Uganda governor Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile.
Nzeyi, 78, is the founder and executive chairman of Crown Beverages Limited, the exclusive bottler of PepsiCo products in Uganda.
