Muhammadu Indimi has another title to his name. The Nigerian businessman, chairman of indigenous oil and gas firm Oriental Energy Resources Limited, received an honorary doctorate in business at Delta State University's 18th convocation ceremony in Abraka, recognizing decades of work building the country's upstream sector and funding social programs through his foundation.

DELSU described Indimi's record as one of entrepreneurial leadership and national economic contribution. The university said his work building Oriental Energy into a sustained presence in Nigeria's upstream oil and gas sector earned the recognition, alongside what it called strong corporate governance standards and a track record of philanthropy through the Muhammadu Indimi Foundation.

The honor lands at a moment when Nigeria's indigenous oil producers are pushing for a bigger share of a sector still dominated by international majors. Oriental Energy holds offshore operating interests in Nigeria's Niger Delta, with the Ebok and Okwok fields offshore Akwa Ibom anchoring its production, and Indimi has built the company from a small upstream player into one of the more recognizable indigenous names in the country's hydrocarbons industry.

DELSU also pointed to Indimi's broader contributions in education and community development. The Muhammadu Indimi Foundation runs scholarship programs, healthcare initiatives and support for vulnerable communities, with much of the work centered in northeastern Nigeria, the region where Indimi began his business career.

The businessman did not attend in person. Augustine Ekeigwe, general manager of assets at Oriental Energy, accepted the doctorate on his behalf and read a short statement. "Today is an incredibly special day for me," Indimi said in the message. "With a very deep sense of humility, I am grateful for the University's recognition of my enterprise, leadership, service, and contributions to society."

DELSU's choice of honoree fits a familiar university playbook of awarding honorary degrees to business figures whose stories can sit alongside academic achievement as motivational examples for graduating students. The university said Indimi's path offers a practical lesson in discipline and perseverance for young Nigerians.

The recognition adds another layer to Indimi's public profile. He is one of the prominent business figures from Nigeria's northeast, his foundation has long been visible in the region's social investments, and the family's profile widened further with high-profile marriages tying it to political circles. The DELSU honor sits inside that broader pattern, an academic stamp on a long-running business career.
