Elon Musk, the billionaire who briefly became the world's first trillionaire this year, added $320 billion to his fortune between July 2025 and July 2026, averaging $875 million a day in new wealth, according to an analysis by financial research firm BestBrokers.
The figures, drawn from the Forbes real-time billionaires list using the Wayback Machine to compare snapshots taken exactly one year apart, reflect one of the most rapid accumulations of personal wealth ever recorded. The primary engine was the June 12 initial public offering of SpaceX, which pushed Musk past the $1 trillion mark before a sharp pullback in the company's shares erased a significant portion of those gains within weeks.
As of early August 2026, Musk's net worth sits between roughly $675 billion and $780 billion, depending on the tracker. Bloomberg's Billionaires Index puts the figure at around $777 billion, Forbes at approximately $744 billion. He remains the world's richest person by a wide margin.
The broader backdrop to Musk's gains is an AI-driven surge across the technology sector that lifted several fortunes simultaneously. Dell Technologies founder and chief executive officer Michael Dell recorded the second-largest one-year increase among the world's wealthiest, adding $107.6 billion over the same period, according to BestBrokers. Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin also saw substantial gains, as did Giancarlo Devasini, the co-founder of stablecoin giant Tether.
Perhaps the most striking individual story in the analysis belongs to Liang Wenfeng, founder of Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek, whose fortune climbed from $1 billion in 2025 to $39.5 billion in 2026, a 3,850% increase in a single year that carried him into the top 50 on the global billionaires list.
Musk's own trajectory from Pretoria to the top of that list spans more than two decades. Born in South Africa, he moved to Canada before his 18th birthday, working a variety of jobs before enrolling at Queen's University in Ontario. He later transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a degree in economics.
His first significant liquidity event came in 2002, when eBay acquired PayPal for $1.4 billion. PayPal had been formed through a merger between X.com, an online bank Musk co-founded, and Confinity, the payments startup Peter Thiel had built.
Musk has been the world's richest person since May 2024. The SpaceX IPO in June was the defining moment of 2026, briefly vaulting him past $1 trillion and into territory no individual had ever reached.
That round trip, from roughly $1 trillion to the high hundreds of billions in a matter of weeks, is the clearest illustration of how paper-based a fortune of this scale really is. Almost all of it sits in equity stakes in Tesla, SpaceX, xAI and X, meaning the number moves with every trading session.
At the current pace, Musk remains in a wealth category entirely his own.
