Irish billionaire John Collison, co-founder and president of payments company Stripe, has been nominated to join Microsoft's board of directors as the technology giant prepares for the departure of two longtime board members.
Microsoft disclosed the nomination in its 2026 proxy statement, published on October 21. Shareholders will vote on Collison's election at the company's annual meeting on December 8, meaning his appointment is not yet final.
The nomination comes as LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and Disney Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston prepare to leave Microsoft's board. Both directors have served since 2017 and will not seek re-election, according to the filing.
Collison, 36, co-founded Stripe with his brother, Patrick Collison, in 2010. The company provides payment processing and financial infrastructure that enables businesses to accept payments and manage transactions online.
His nomination brings the perspective of a technology entrepreneur who has helped build one of the world's largest privately held financial technology companies. Stripe has expanded beyond payment processing into billing, tax compliance, fraud prevention and other financial services for internet businesses.
In its 2025 annual update, published in February 2026, Stripe reported that businesses using its platform processed $1.9 trillion in total payment volume during 2025, representing a 34% increase from the previous year.
The company also reported a $159 billion valuation following a tender offer that provided liquidity to current and former employees, underscoring its position in the global payments industry.
Microsoft already has commercial ties to Stripe. The payments company supports Microsoft Copilot Checkout, which enables eligible users in the United States to purchase products from participating retailers through Microsoft's AI assistant.
Collison's experience building Stripe's payments infrastructure could provide Microsoft's board with additional insight into digital commerce, financial technology and the commercial opportunities emerging from artificial intelligence.
Hoffman joined Microsoft's board following the company's acquisition of LinkedIn in 2016, bringing experience from the professional networking platform and the broader technology investment industry. Johnston, meanwhile, chairs Microsoft's board audit committee while serving as Disney's chief financial officer.
Former EY chief executive Carmine Di Sibio, who joined Microsoft's board in May 2026, is also standing for election by shareholders for the first time at the upcoming annual meeting.
Collison's nomination comes as Microsoft continues to invest in artificial intelligence, cloud computing and the digital infrastructure supporting its global business. His election would add the perspective of a founder whose company operates at the intersection of financial services, technology and online commerce.
