West Properties Holdings (WestProp), the Harare-based real estate holding company led by Zimbabwean businessman Ken Sharpe, has broken ground on Pomona Flats—launching the first phase of its ambitious $4 billion Pomona City development. The project aims to transform urban living in Harare, offering what Sharpe describes as a modern, self-contained community.
Apartments start at $70,000 in Pomona City
Located next to Wingate Golf Club and near Harare’s expanding Green Zone, Pomona City will be designed as “a city within a city,” where residents can live, work, and access essential services without needing to leave the neighborhood.
“Today marks more than the laying of bricks; it marks the foundation of a thriving, self-contained community,” Ken Sharpe, the CEO WestProp Holdings, said at the groundbreaking event. “Pomona is where urban aspirations meet lifestyle innovation, a place where families flourish.”
Pomona Flats will serve as the first development under the Pomona City plan and marks WestProp’s first high-rise project in Harare North. The units, ranging from one- to three-bedroom apartments, will start at $70,000. WestProp is also opening the door to bulk purchases by corporations and government bodies looking to provide housing for employees.
$174 million boost to local economy
The project adds to WestProp’s expanding real estate portfolio, which already includes Millennium Heights, a wellness-centered apartment community; Pokugara, a residential neighborhood built around green open spaces; and The Hills Luxury Golf Estate, which is expected to feature Zimbabwe’s first PGA-grade golf course.
Speaking at the launch, WestProp Chairman Michael Louis said the goal of Pomona City goes beyond bricks and mortar. “It’s a transformational space designed with people and sustainability in mind. At WestProp, we don’t build structures — we craft environments,” he said. Louis added that the company aims to have ten active developments in Harare by the end of the year, supporting over 1,000 jobs and contributing $174 million to the city’s economy.
Ken Sharpe's vision reshapes urban living in Zimbabwe
WestProp’s expansion reflects years of steady growth under Ken Sharpe’s leadership. The company has strengthened its position through partnerships and acquisitions, including Augur Investments and West Food Distribution. It has also played a role in upgrading public markets in Harare, such as the Sunshine Bazaar, Mbudzi Peoples Market, and Shawasha Mall in Mbare.
Earlier in May 2024, WestProp began work on The Hills Luxury Golf Estate, a $300 million development on the site of the former Warren Hills Golf Club. The estate will include 862 homes, ranging from apartments and villas to townhouses and retirement units, as well as an on-site clinic offering round-the-clock care and Zimbabwe’s first PGA-standard championship course.
