Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, added about $3.3 million to his fortune as investors digested the latest details of the planned public offering of his $20 billion oil refinery.

Dangote’s wealth rose by roughly $3.3 million on Friday, according to Forbes’ real-time billionaire tracker, as Nigerian markets responded to developments surrounding the Dangote Refinery’s upcoming initial public offering (IPO). BusinessDay reported that Dangote’s fortune stood at about $31.5 billion, up from $31.47 billion previously.

The gain came a day after the refinery’s IPO moved closer to the market. On Thursday, Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission approved the offering at ₦525 per share, with 4.1 billion ordinary shares to be offered to investors from September 14. The offer is expected to raise about ₦2.15 trillion, or approximately $1.63 billion.

The approved offer values the refinery at about $47 billion and represents one of the largest equity offerings ever planned in Africa. Dangote intends to use the proceeds to support the expansion of the refinery’s capacity from its current 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day.

The latest wealth increase is separate from the IPO valuation itself. Dangote’s $3.3 million gain reflects the movement in his personal fortune, while the $47 billion figure represents the valuation assigned to the refinery under the approved share offering. The two figures therefore measure different things.

The refinery, located in Lagos, has become the centrepiece of Dangote’s industrial empire and one of the most closely watched assets in Nigeria’s capital market. The 650,000-barrel-per-day facility reached full production capacity earlier this year and has tested output as high as 700,000 barrels per day.

The IPO marks the next major stage in Dangote’s effort to bring outside investors into the refinery. The company plans to sell 4.1 billion shares initially, with a greenshoe option allowing the offering to be increased by as much as 15% if demand is strong. Dangote has also secured $400 million in underwriting commitments for the transaction.

Investor interest in the offering comes as the refinery expands its role in Nigeria’s petroleum market. Its scale has already reduced the country’s dependence on imported refined products, while the planned capacity expansion is intended to position the facility as a major supplier to markets beyond Nigeria.

For Dangote, the IPO could also mark a significant change in the ownership structure of his flagship energy asset. Although he will remain the dominant shareholder, the sale will give Nigerian investors an opportunity to own a stake in the refinery and provide the business with additional capital for expansion.

Dangote’s fortune has risen sharply this year as the refinery has moved from a long-term construction project into full-scale commercial operations. Forbes valued him at $31.5 billion as of September 4, placing him among the world’s wealthiest industrialists.

The September 14 opening of the IPO will now provide the next test of investor appetite for Africa’s biggest refinery and one of the continent’s most ambitious capital-market transactions.
