South African born billionaire Patrick Soon Shiong has led a $75 million Series B funding round for Multiply Labs, a biotechnology company developing robotic systems designed to automate pharmaceutical manufacturing.
The financing, announced on October 6, was led by NantWorks, the healthcare and technology group founded by Soon Shiong. The investment gives the billionaire a deeper position in a growing segment of biotechnology focused on automating the production of complex medicines.
Multiply Labs develops robotic systems that automate pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, with a particular focus on cell and gene therapies. Its technology is designed to help pharmaceutical companies scale production while reducing the manual work involved in manufacturing advanced treatments.
The company plans to use the new funding to expand its technology and operations as it works with pharmaceutical manufacturers seeking greater automation. The financing comes as drugmakers face growing challenges around the cost, complexity and scalability of producing advanced therapies.
Soon Shiong’s participation through NantWorks adds the latest investment to a portfolio that spans biotechnology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and technology. The billionaire has built much of his fortune through healthcare businesses and investments, including NantWorks and its affiliated companies.
The investment also strengthens Soon Shiong’s exposure to the infrastructure supporting the pharmaceutical industry rather than focusing solely on drug development. Multiply Labs’ systems are aimed at the manufacturing stage, where automation can help companies increase production capacity and standardize processes.
Soon Shiong was born in South Africa and later built his career in the United States as a surgeon, biotechnology entrepreneur and investor. He founded NantWorks, a network of healthcare and technology companies, and has invested in areas including cancer treatment, artificial intelligence and biotechnology.
The Multiply Labs financing highlights the billionaire’s continued interest in biotechnology and healthcare technologies as pharmaceutical companies invest in automation to improve how complex medicines are manufactured and delivered at scale.
For Multiply Labs, the Series B provides additional capital to commercialize its robotic manufacturing technology and expand its presence in the pharmaceutical sector.
