South African insurance mogul and Discovery co-founder Adrian Gore has seen a sharp rebound in his wealth, with the value of his stake in the Sandton-based insurer climbing by more than $60 million. The surge follows a strong rally in Discovery’s share price on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE)

Gore's Discovery stake gains $61.5 million

Gore, one of South Africa’s wealthiest individuals, holds a 7.19 percent stake in Discovery—equivalent to approximately 48.6 million shares. Over the past month, the market value of his stake has climbed by R1.12 billion ($61.5 million), lifting the market value to just over $550 million.

This gain follows a rough patch earlier in April, when his holdings dropped by $39.83 million within two weeks. Between April 1 and 13, the value fell from R9.99 billion ($528.43 million) to R9.24 billion ($488.59 million), as Discovery came under pressure in the markets.

Market rally lifts Discovery’s market cap above $7.6 billion

Discovery was founded in 1992 by Adrian Gore and Barry Swartzberg as a medical insurance company. Since then, it has expanded into long-term and short-term insurance, asset management, and investment services. Throughout this journey, Gore has remained at the heart of the business, playing a key role in turning Discovery into one of South Africa’s top names in both healthcare and financial services.

In the past month, the Sandton-based insurer’s shares have gained 12.58 percent, rising from R183.50 ($10.05) on April 11 to R206.58 ($11.32). This surge has lifted Discovery’s market value to more than $7.6 billion, rewarding shareholders—including Gore himself.

Thanks to the rally, the value of Gore’s stake in the company has jumped by R1.12 billion ($61.5 million) over the same period. His holdings climbed from R8.92 billion ($488.97 million) to R10.05 billion ($550.47 million), further solidifying his status as one of South Africa’s most prominent business figures and one of the wealthiest investors on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

Discovery shares up 6.06% YTD

The recent rally in Discovery’s stock has contributed to a 6.06 percent year-to-date gain for investors, further cementing its position as one of the most valuable stocks on the JSE. A $100,000 investment in the insurer at the beginning of 2025 would now be worth $106,060—a $6,060 gain since the start of the year.
