South African billionaire business magnate Patrice Motsepe on Tuesday firmly rejected speculation that he intends to vie for leadership of the ruling African National Congress, describing rumors of a presidential bid as “not part of my plans.”
Speaking at the annual gathering of South Africa’s National Editors Forum in Johannesburg, Motsepe said his focus remains squarely on his businesses, philanthropy and promoting national unity. “My contribution to South Africa does not require holding office,” he told the audience.
Motsepe reaffirmed his long-standing identity as a loyal ANC supporter, calling the party “the Mandela party” and dismissing suggestions that he has ambitions to challenge for political leadership. His remarks came after weeks of speculation over whether one of the country’s richest men might step into the political arena.
